Gold Coast City come back from 6-1 down to win 8-6 in extra-time in Queensland NPL pre-season clash

NPL club Gold Coast City were down 6-1 in their hit-out against Brisbane Premier League outfit Holland Park Hawks after 63 minutes.

The BLK Silver Boot tournament third-place play-off then turned on its head when Lyndon Dykes came off the bench and scored a hat-trick to steer the game into extra-time.

But, astonishingly, the Gold Coast outfit got up 8-6 by the end of extra-time, adding seven goals with no reply.

City were down 0-4 at half-time, but coach Grae Piddick told The Gold Coast Bulletin the “crazy game” swung when he brought on his big guns, Daniel Dragicevic (two goals), skipper Justyn McKay, Ben Litfin, Dykes, Tim Jackson and Rhys Saunders.

“I rotated the side a fair bit to start with and we conceded some sloppy goals,” Piddick said.

Silver Boot champions Brisbane Lions knocked City out on Thursday last week in the semi-final, which wraps up the NPL club’s pre-season ahead of their season opener against Redlands United on February 27.

Brisbane City, Brisbane Strikers, Olympic FC, Ipswich’s Western Pride, Gold Coast’s Palm Beach SC, Toowoomba’s SWQ Thunder and bayside outfit Redlands United played in the annual pre-season tournament hosted by Brisbane Premier League club Lions FC. They were joined by other clubs from the third tier Brisbane Premier League, including defending Silver Boot holders Eastern Suburbs FC.

The BLK Silver Boot is Queensland football’s longest running pre-season tournament – but it’s probably never had such global publicity!

RESUMINDO:
